Cycle 2024, No. 15: The Wasteland, 2024

Description: This piece is composed of four long and narrow multi-layered boards attached together on the back by hinges. Starting from left to right on the top left board, a mangled plastic container is the first object. To the right is a black piece of plastic resembling an arch, to the right of that as a piece of wood with a smaller black piece above that. Past the edge of the piece of wood are two pieces of a styrofoam arc; a piece of a branch threads between the two pieces of the arc. Further to the right is another piece of wood, above this piece of wood is a longer string of black plastic with several pieces attached to it. The object furthest to the right is smaller piece of wood.
The top right board has no objects attached to it but several of the upper layers are torn off, exposing the underlying layers of wood.
From left to right on the bottom left board, a large ornately-designed wood cross is the first object, an LED string light wraps around its components. Just past this cross is a smaller piece of wood, past this is the battery bank for the LED string light and the remains of a glass and wood construction. All that's left of this construction are the two left and right edges, pieces from the top and bottom edges are scattered around. Between the piece of wood and the battery bank is a branch. Past this is a small piece of wood and the lid of the wood construction. Past this is another small piece of wood and near this is a circular piece of wood. Near the top edge is a large black plastic stake. Between the stake and another piece of wood is a third branch. Just past this is the lid of a second wood construction, past this, on top of a large piece of wood, is the remains of this wood construction. The furthest object to the right is the drawer from the second wood construction; the front and left edge are separated.
The bottom right board has the front edge of the drawer and a smoke detector attached to its left edge, the rest has no objects but this one has the upper layers taken off.
The four boards are covered in a mix of black and white acrylic.
Meaning: This piece is the fifteenth in my 2024 cycle of works based on the two artists I consider to be my greatest inspirations: Robert Rauschenberg and Emilio Vedova. This piece's title comes from "The Wasteland" by Adolph Gottlieb, who I was researching during this piece's construction. The meaning of this specific piece is up to the viewer.
Medium: Acrylic, branches, glass, LED lights, plastic, smoke detector, and wood on wood with hinges
