Cycle 2024, No. 12: Division

Description: This piece is made on a pre-made map of the United States available at craft stores. All of the 50 states are painted either black or white.
Meaning: This piece is the twelfth in my 2024 cycle of works based on the two artists I consider to be my greatest inspirations: Robert Rauschenberg and Emilio Vedova. The colors for the states are inspired by the 2020 election results and the piece is meant to be a commentary on how divisive America has become. However, in choosing to paint the Republican states as white and the Democrat states as black the work itself becomes divisive.
Medium: Acrylic on wood
Size: 23-1/2" wide x 16.8" tall
